What's CCN?

CCN stands for Complex Communication Needs and is used to describe communication when an individual has little or no verbal speech.
A person with CCN:
  • May have clear speech in some environments and be difficult to understand in other situations.
  • May be intelligible to familiar people but unfamiliar people have trouble understanding speech.
  • May get tired very easily leading to speech that is difficult to understand.
  • May be able to speak a few words but has difficulty saying longer phrases.
  • May be completely non-verbal.

What's AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and is used to describe method of communication that enhance or augment verbal speech.

We all use different methods of communication - gesture, writing, social media, text messaging. Some people need different supports such as symbol-based communication systems, iPad apps or voice output devices.

There are AAC systems to suit individuals of all abilities. AAC can be adapted for individuals with physical, vision, hearing or sensory impairments.

What's a PODD book?

Picture
PODD stands for Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display. A PODD book is one form of AAC and are designed to be used alongside other methods of communication.

Say It Your Way can provide PODD books including the trial, training, modelling and customisation process.

PODD books are a robust communication system and they are developed to allow a person to communicate whatever they want to say. They can support individuals with CCN to express themselves and can also help develop receptive language skills (understanding and use of language).

PODD books are being used as a classroom tool by many teachers. They have helped bridge access barriers for children with CCN in the classroom.

PODD books come in many different forms and can be customised to suit the individual needs of each person. PODD books were developed by Gayle Porter, a speech pathologist at the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre in Melbourne.
